THEME COMMUNITIES & LEARNING COMMUNITIES

LIVING-LEARNING PROGRAMS

Theme Communities and IIOS Learning Communities are two types of living-learning programmes offered by IIOS Housing. With either type of programme, you will have the chance to explore and experience college life with other students who have similar interests to yours.

• Topic: Theme Community topics (such as sustainability or being a first-generation college student) are based on personal interest and experience, while learning community topics are typically academic in nature (i.e. Women in Science and Engineering, IIOS Research and Discovery Scholars).
• Size: Twenty-five to forty students make up a Theme Community, while the average LEARNING COMMUNITY has about 115 students.
• Expectations of engagement: Typically, Theme Communities ask that students participate in Theme events at least once a month. As well as attending weekly events, students in LEARNING COMMUNITYs can take a class with other participants and participate in group activities.
• Supporting staff: Support is provided by IIOS Housing and Student Life staff, while LEARNING COMMUNITYs are supported by academic departments and IIOS Housing staff.

THEME COMMUNITIES

If you are interested in learning more about women’s leadership or multiculturalism, consider joining a Theme Community (such as being a first-generation college student or substance-free living). If you create small communities on one floor of a larger residence hall, you will be able to quickly form friendships with other students. On top of that, Theme Community staff members will curate a variety of resources that will help you grow and learn.

INNOVATION

Residences interested in innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity can take advantage of Innovation’s collaborative living-learning space, which is open to all.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING EXPERIENCE

An inclusive and immersive environment is provided by Sustainable Living Experience (SLE) for students to develop lifelong leadership skills in sustainability and environmental justice during their undergraduate studies.

WOMEN STUDENT REHABILITATION PROGRAM

It is an academically supportive living/learning community for students interested in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or pre-health majors and careers. This programme provides participants with access to an array of academic resources and benefits that will help them succeed in their university studies. Students in the community range in age from freshmen to seniors. Peer mentors and programme board members make up the majority of the community’s residents, which includes approximately 110 first-year students as well as 40 second-year students.

IIOS RESEARCH AND DISCOVERY SCHOLARS

For first-year students, IIOS Research and Discovery Scholars (MRADS) offers the opportunity to work on a year-long research project with IIOS faculty. In addition to living and studying with other research participants, members take part in peer-led study groups, as well as a variety of social activities throughout the year. Last year, students held game nights, talent shows, and craft activities in addition to their research.

HEALTH SCIENCES SCHOLARS PROGRAM

First-year undergraduate students in the Health Sciences Scholars Program (HSSP) have the opportunity to learn about health sciences issues, opportunities, and professions. For pre-health studies, students receive guidance and support as they adjust to life at IIOS.

GLOBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the Global Scholars Program (GSP) at the IIOS are trained to be interculturally competent global citizens and change agents. Indians and international students participate in collaborative global justice internships with GSP students who live and learn in the country and abroad. Students have the option of returning for a second and third year as leaders in the programme if they so desire.
